The 12 Best Women’s Winter Hiking Pants

Winter hiking means preparing for cold, and potentially wet, weather conditions. When choosing the right winter hiking pants, you need to think about insulation, wind protection, moisture protection from the inside and out, as well as how quickly a fabric will dry.

Features of the Best Women’s Hiking Pants

Winter hiking pants for women - female hiker in winter

There are a few factors you should take into consideration before purchasing a pair of women’s hiking pants. If you plan on doing a great deal of hiking during your travels, you will need a very specific pair of women’s cold weather hiking pants to do the job.

Here are some of the features found in a great pair of women’s hiking pants.

Quality Material

The material plays an important part in deciding which pair of women’s winter hiking pants you should purchase.

  • The material should be warm but breathable so that you don’t overheat.
  • It should also be quick-drying – as during hikes you’re more than likely going to get wet at some point. You don’t want to stay wet for the rest of the hike as this will cause uncomfortable chafing.
  • The fabric should also be abrasion-resistant especially for women’s climbing pants, as you wouldn’t want them ripping or tearing on twigs and branches.
  • Consider a pair of hiking pants that contain a high percentage of nylon as these will dry quickly and are fairly strong when mixed with another fiber.
  • It’s best to avoid pants that contain a high percentage of cotton as these take a longer time to dry.

Snug Fit

You could be planning a Northern Lights trip to Finnish Lapland or making the great trek up Mount Kilimanjaro. Either way, you’ll need a pair of women’s winter hiking pants with the correct fit for your body type.

Having hiking pants that look flattering or stylish is an added extra, but it shouldn’t be the main reason you buy them. Make sure the hiking pants you purchase are easy to move around in and give you a great range of motion (especially if you’re going to be doing climbing). They also shouldn’t be too tight.

Versatility

If you’re spending money on a pair of great quality hiking pants, it’s essential that they are versatile. Preferably, they’d be able to be used in a variety of different scenarios for any winter destination.

Women’s convertible hiking pants are great as they are capable of converting into shorts by simply zipping the bottom half off. This is very useful as getting a little warm on your hike won’t be a problem and you save money because they can be used in all 4 seasons.

If you don’t like the idea of having a zipper running across your thigh, then choose a pair that can easily be rolled up to the knee.

Protection Against Elements

Although we are specifically looking at the best women’s hiking pants for winter, it’s a good idea to make sure they have UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), as many countries still get harsh winter sun, as do higher, cooler elevations.

Studies show that a high percentage of UV rays can penetrate your clothing, and the last thing you need on your hiking trip is sunburn or worse, especially if you have sun-sensitive skin like me.

With these factors in mind as you prepare to make a winter hiking pants purchase, let’s take a look at the ones you should be considering for your needs.

  1. Jackie, I’m heading out for an Antarctic expedition. Lots of time in a Zodiac.. Planning on my base layer, then winter hiking pants and the option to wear rain pants while in the Zodiac. Would take rain pants off when off the Zodiac. Major requirements for winter hiking pants is ease of motion and warmth. Looking at minimum temperatures around 0°F. Maximum temperatures around 50°F. Which hiking pants would you select? Thank You!

Thanks for reading, Regina! And, I must admit…I’m so jealous! 😉 I only made it as far as Ushuaia because of limited time. Next time, it’s onward to Antarctica! You have a wide range of temperatures to prepare for. I’d look closely at the Patagonia Women’s Insulated Snowbelle Pants, the Arctix Women’s Insulated Snow Pants, and the slimmer-fitting pants like Kuhl Klash or Outdoor Research’s Hyak Soft-Shell Pants because they offer warmth and mobility. I hope that helps to narrow it down and you have a fantastic trip! Thank you again for reading.

  2. Hello Jackie,

Thank you so much for this, it is so helpful!
Can I ask to help me narrow it down even more? What do you recommend for a trip in Ushuaia and Perito Moreno? I assume you went there according to your answer to Regina 🙂

    Thank you again!!

Thanks for reading, Emily, and fantastic about your trip! I was in Ushuaia and trekked on Perito Moreno. I was there in March so it was becoming Fall. The days still had sun but it could be windy and chilly. I’d go for the insulated Columbia Bugaboo pants or the Patagonia Snowbelle pants or the Arctix pants. I wore my insulated Columbia pants for the glacier trek and while doing boating excursions from Ushuaia. The glacier can be windy once you trek onto it. Ushuaia and Torres del Paine were the windiest overall locations. Hope that helps and you have a great trip!
