5 Expert Travel Packing Tips
1. Use packing cubes to organize your bag.
Were you a “late-to-the-party” packing cube convert like me? I just wasn’t convinced…that is until I won my first set of packing cubes from participating in travel Twitter chat. Packing cubes go beyond keeping your clothes organized. When you’re changing hotels or moving from place to place, it can be such a hassle to unpack and repack your bag again and again. Packing cubes allow you to pack smarter. You can organize cubes by clothing type, by day, or even by pieces of clothing that pair well to make several outfits. Either way, you eliminate the need to unpack your entire bag looking for that favorite tee-shirt or perfect sundress. You’ll know where everything is and can be sure it’ll still be in the same place when you open your bag again.
2. Roll your clothes instead of folding them.
Likely to cause a controversy with diehard flat-folding travelers, but I’m an unabashed clothes roller. Once my clothes are organized and rolled, I can tightly line up each clothing roll side by side to save space and avoid wrinkling. Rolling your clothes also lets you see everything you’ve packed. If the rolls are in packing cubes, even better! There’ll be no need to unpack anything. You’ll be able to find exactly what you’re looking for with just a quick glance.
3. Don’t overpack on shoes.
Of all the travel packing tips out there, this one is still the trickiest for me! Shoes are clunky and big. They take up so much space! Not to mention, too many pairs dash all hopes of traveling lightly. My rule is to take no more than 2 pairs of shoes, including the pair I’m wearing. If you’re visiting a city, bring a comfortable pair for walking and sightseeing and something nicer if you plan to dress up at night. If you’re hiking or doing other outdoors activities, an extra pair of sneakers or hiking shoes makes sense in case one gets wet or muddy. Remember to use the insides of that extra pair for storage of smaller items like a pair of glasses or chargers for electronics.
4. Pack clothes that serve many purposes.
Why clutter your bag (or packing cubes!) with clothes you can only wear one way or, worse, items you don’t even end up wearing? Tops, bottoms, and dresses should have at least 2-3 ways to wear them in order to make it into your bag. Take the time to plan out a few outfits or uses for each item. It’s a good way to make sure you haven’t packed duplicates or an item “just in case!” Any top you pack has to work with more than 1 bottom. It also should be versatile enough to be dressed up or down depending on the style you need. Packing clothes in a specific color palette is really helpful, too! You’ll have tops, bottoms, and dresses that all match and all work with the shoes you pack.
5. Leave the hairdryer at home.
I’ve stayed in many hotels around the globe and they always have a hairdryer. If it’s not in the room, just ask. I’ve yet to be told, no I’m sorry we don’t have a hairdryer for our guests. Hairdryers take up so much space and, when traveling outside of the U.S., the models may not work even with a plug adaptor depending how many watts the hairdryer needs to work properly. Save the space in your bag for more useful items or for all those souvenirs you plan to bring home with you. 😉
